The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is a space-borne,
cryogenically-cooled infrared observatory capable of studying
objects ranging from our Solar System to the distant reaches of
the Universe. SIRTF is the final element in NASA's Great
Observatories Program, and an important scientific and technical
cornerstone of the new Astronomical Search for Origins Program.
The SIRTF telescope integrates the beryllium mirrors and
structure built by Goodrich for the JPL Infrared Telescope
Technology Testbed (ITTT), a key technology demonstrator for
SIRTF. ITTT is an example of lightweight optical system
technology, and the telescope weighs less than 30 Kg including
the Primary Mirror, Bulkhead, Metering Structure and Secondary
Mirror Assembly. SIRTF has a planned Summer 2002 launch date.

SIRTF web site.
